International HUMAN RIGHTS DAY – 10 December

Today, DARLON joins the global community in commemorating Human Rights Day, marking the anniversary of the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) in 1948, a historic milestone that affirmed the inherent dignity, equality, and rights of every human being.

This year’s theme, “Human Rights: Our Everyday Essentials,” is a powerful reminder that human rights are not distant ideals. They are the principles that shape daily life, from access to education and safety to fairness in service delivery, freedom of expression, and the right to live with dignity.

In the Dadaab refugee context, where thousands rely on humanitarian support and community protection systems, these rights are more than words; they are a lifeline.

DARLON’s Commitment: As a network led by refugees and rooted in community-driven advocacy, DARLON remains dedicated to:

A). Promoting inclusive human rights awareness across refugee and host communities
B). Strengthening community protection structures and peaceful coexistence
C). Engaging youth, women, and persons with disabilities as active human rights defenders
D). Elevating community concerns to humanitarian and government stakeholders
E). Ensuring that dignity, fairness, and accountability guide all humanitarian processes

Today, we reaffirm our commitment to advancing human rights as everyday essentials for every individual in Dadaab.

Marking the Day in Dadaab.
To commemorate this important day, DARLON and its member RLOs conducted an Inter-Community Inclusive Human Rights Dialogue Forum in Ifo Refugee Camp, supported by the United Nations Human Rights Office (OHCHR).

Refugee and host community participants engaged in constructive dialogue on key issues affecting their rights and wellbeing.
Among the challenges raised were:
~ Miscategorization of vulnerable refugee households, affecting access to food humanitarian assistance and other essential services.
~ Shrinking humanitarian assistance and service quality without alternative support systems
~ The need for inclusive, transparent, and rights-based approaches in aid management

These concerns reflect the community’s desire for fairness, dignity, and sustainable solutions in the face of growing pressures.

#DARLON will continue to advocate for:
A). Rights-based and inclusive humanitarian decision-making
B). Stronger accountability and clearer communication with communities
C). Protection systems that centre the needs of the most vulnerable
D). Increased collaboration between communities, RLOs, government, and aid partners

We salute the courage of refugee and host community members who raise their voices constructively and commit to peaceful dialogue as a tool for change.

Let’s have a courageous and empowering Human Rights Day!
